A memorable History page
It’s ‘January 1077 and the Emperor Henry IV, under a strong blizzard, remains three days in front of the portal of the Canossa castle to beg pardon to Pope Gregory VII, host of the Countess Matilda of Tuscany.
The clash between the temporal power and the power of the Church culminates in a gesture that will change the course of history of the Western world.
Every stone of the ruins of the castle tells the figure of Matilde. Courageous and determined woman, protagonist of a political opposition to the emperor and supporter of the papacy. Matilde is the most important
female character of the Middle Age, a political figure that still hides secrets and exerts a great charm on thousands of visitors of the ruins of her castle.
The traces of ancient fortifications, the vast and picturesque landscape that you can enjoy from the top of the cliff, the unique and fascinating geological formations and the testimonies kept that recall the epic figure of Matilde, help to make the site a very enjoyable experience.
The nearby museum, located at the top of the cliff, preserves testimonies coming mostly from the castle excavations carried out in the years 1877 and 1893 by Gaetano Chierici and, later, of Naborre Campanini.
