EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

The National Museum of Ravenna is situated in former Benedictine monastery of San Vitale, and contains important testimonies of the ancient collections together with materials from the major early Christian and Byzantine monuments of Ravenna

Located in the monumental complex of San Vitale, the National Museum of Ravenna collects important archaeological findings, including funeral steles and Roman inscriptions, and collections of minor arts. The original nucleus of the museum originated from the collections formed during the eighteenth century by the learned monks of the major city abbeys.
On the first floor, in the neat Benedictine architecture, we can see an important collection of ivories, fine Renaissance bronze, a rich group of icons, a section dedicated to majolica ceramics and a fascinating collection
of ancient weapons. Among the most prestigious finds one can see oriental marble capitals, decorated sarcophagi and other artifacts from the fifth and sixth centuries.

The best known works are those from the early Christian and Byzantine monuments in the Unesco World Heritage List, including the transennas and the cross of San Vitale and the preparatory sketch (sinopia) for the mosaic of Sant’Apollinare in Classe. Inside the museum there is also the important cycle of frescoes of the fourteenth century, a masterpiece by Pietro da Rimini, detached from the ancient church of Santa Chiara in
Ravenna.
