Where the eagles fly

San Leo, an ancient city is rich in monuments, enjoys a spectacular panorama, which overlooks the Marecchia Valley on a huge and unsurmountable boulder.

The ancient city of San Leo, so rich in monuments, enjoys a spectacular panorama, which overlooks the Marecchia Valley on a huge and unsurmountable boulder. It is accessible by a sole and evocative road
cut into the rocks. The fortress, one of the most celebrated examples of military art, rises on the highest peak, showing all its architectural splendor. The unconquerable Fort, rebuilt in the 15th century, now
houses, as Museum, a significant amount of art objects and tools of use related to its past. By 1631 the Fort was converted into a prison with narrow cells where Risorgimento Patriots and freethinkers as
Giuseppe Balsamo, known as Count Alessandro di Cagliostro, were imprisoned. Alchemist and healer, considered to be an occultist heretic, the fame of the adventurer and the mystery of its manifold
activities still hovers between the walls of the cramped cell where he was segregated.
